Quarantine
As part of our commitment to quality, SCALES ensures that our fish are the healthiest possible specimens available in the aquarium trade. We are the only store in the region that uses separate quarantine systems to prepare the fish we sell for your aquarium. Over 200 tanks in our back-up areas are dedicated to receiving and holding fish until they are ready to sell. Our fish look better, act more naturally and offer our customers the best value for the dollar with our extra effort to get them ready for your aquarium.
Quarantine protocols at SCALES are carefully designed so that any livestock gets exactly what it needs to get it ready for sale, nothing more. Generally speaking, freshwater fish are simply kept in clean aquariums for a few days to ensure that they are healthy and eating. In cases where treatments are required, each group of animals is treated for exactly and only the symptoms shown. Our expert staff has all medications required to prepare fish for sale and in all cases will use the most gentle treatments available consistent with the symptoms. Only after the fish are healthy are they offered for sale.
With marine fishes, treatments are initially limited to hyposalinic conditions (low salinity) to avoid parasitic outbreaks that are commonly associated with recently shipped fishes. As with all other livestock, further treatments are performed in separate tanks or systems and only those fish displaying indications of disease are treated. In addition, our marine fish are carefully trained to eat commonly available foods to ensure that they are ready for your aquarium. Corals and invertebrates are sterilized using a broad-spectrum dip. Any obvious hitchhikers like Acropora crabs, mantis shrimps, fire worms and nudibranchs are removed.
